Symptoms of Depression

Depression symptoms are different for everyone. Some people have depression symptoms that are severe and very obvious when something about them doesn't look or feel right. However, to others, these symptoms can be subtle and in general they feel miserable or unhappy about themselves without specific reasons.

Depressed mood
Depressed people feel sad or empty and may even cry frequently. Both children and adults may even display irritability and similar depression symptoms. Although depression is often explained as being in an extreme state of sadness, there is a difference between clinical depression and sadness. A sad person feels bad but with the hope for strength to move on while a person with clinical depression may feel overwhelmed and hopeless.

Decreased Interest
Depression sufferers may experience lack of pleasure from what would normally be pleasurable to them. This symptom is known as anaerobia, an integral feature of major depression. This can happen when they carry out their daily activities or favorite past time.

Weight Changes
Changes in weight gain or loss with no intention may indicate sign of depression. Weight gain is a side-effect that is common to many antidepressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. Patients who gain weight on these medications often suffered from uncontrollable craving for starchy or sweet food.

Sleep Disturbance
Weight gain or loss is an indicator as is a change in sleep patterns. Sleep patterns and mood are closely related. Sleep deprivation or insomnia makes us irritable and depressed. Many people turn to medication to solve the problem while others continue to be restless, slow and physically and mentally fatigue.

Feeling Worthless and Guilty
Those who are depressed may even feel worthless and guilty about things that they cannot control. Teens are more prone to suffer from these feelings and unable to cope well due to level of maturity. At the beginning, they may display low self-esteem and feel bad about themselves and desperate need love and approval. They may even mistake intimate feelings of sex as an expression of love.

Feeling Suicidal
Continuous feeling of despair may lead a person to think about death with or without a specific plan. Some people may out of the blue talks or jokes about suicide and even pay unusual visits or call people one cares about just to say good-byes. While others may suddenly become happier or calmer and tend to give away their possessions, make arrangement and set their affairs in order. The extreme may have self-destructive behavior such as indulge in alcohol and drug abuse and self destruction.

Psychomotor Agitation
People who are depressed can be both nervous and restless or physically slowed down in movements. Although many people experience such symptoms, other may experience the opposite such as feeling of anger, agitation and irritability. This is referred as “agitated agitation.”

“Brain Fog”
A depressed person is more likely to lose focus and ability to think and concentrate. “Brain fog” occurs and causes one to be indecisive. As time passes, one may be doubtful and negative thoughts may persist to delay them from taking action.
