Prisons are known as the "Department of Corrections". Why wouldn't the afterlife be different, assuming we are speaking of the Judeo-Christian God? Well, the idea of eternal hell is contrary to God's character and is about as cruel and immoral as it gets. Anyway, looking at the original translations in the Bible, I believe it favors universalism.

To be very honest with you, I don't understand what you're talking about with universalism. If you're a Christian, there's nothing hidden about hell fire and what's going to get your soul there. Sin without repentance will get you into the firey depths of hell.

That's why we are giving as much time to repent from our sins and come back to God. He's a merciful father but he doesn't go back to his words.
