Responsibilities and Depression: The Thin Line

IMG_0987.jpeg

My Grandmother used to say that adulthood comes with responsibilities. There comes a point in life when responsibilities stop feeling like responsibilities and start feeling like weight.

Bills need to be paid. Family needs you. Work needs our attention. People expect you to show up, even on the days when you barely have the strength to get out of bed.
You keep going because you have to.
That is where the line between responsibility and emotional exhaustion can become very thin.
Sometimes, you are not lazy. You are simply tired. Not the kind of tired that disappears after a good night’s sleep, but the kind that makes everything feel difficult.

You may still go to work, answer messages, take care of your family and smile when people ask how you are. From the outside, everything looks fine. Inside, however, you may be struggling.

One of the hardest things about depression is that life does not always give you permission to stop. Responsibilities continue even when your mind is asking for a break.
And because you are still functioning, people may assume you are okay.

But functioning is not the same as feeling okay.
Sometimes, you need to admit that you are overwhelmed. You need to rest without feeling guilty. You need someone to talk to. You may even need professional help. It is important that you don’t shy away from these.
Being responsible does not mean carrying everything alone. There is strength in admitting that something is becoming too heavy.

So if you are constantly saying, “I just need to keep going,” take a moment to ask yourself something else:
“How am I really doing?”

Because sometimes, the person everyone depends on also needs someone to depend on.

I’m rooting for you.

My name is Karolina, I’m 28 years old and I live in Poland, in Warsaw.

I’m very happy to join you 😊
