My brother can't quit alcohol in his depression

How can someone who's been depressed for a long time and still addicted to drinking alcoholic beverages stop drinking? His depression caused him to start drinking, since then he can't stop.

How can we help him to stop drinking first in order to focus on treating his depression?

Try to take away anything that can trigger the temptation for him to drink. Also, don't try to get him to stop at once, start by making him reduce his alcohol intake, little by little up to the point where he can go without it.

Since it is depression that made him start taking alcohol, the addiction can only go away when the depression goes too. So it’s better to tackle the depression, not the drinking problem.

This is exactly what I thought of because the guy wasn't a drinker before but as a result of his depression, he started drinking. So, the only way for him to stop drinking is for him to get his depression problem sorted out.

He should seek professional help and try as much as possible not to isolate himself too much. As for the drinking problem, it can’t go away until depression does.
